Epilepsy Patients First to Benefit from Combined ActivPrescription™ and Maya™ Electronic Pillbox Technologies through Epilepsy.com
Lexington, MA and Newton, MA — Irody, the leader in software for patient reported symptoms and outcomes, and MedMinder Systems, the leader in medication adherence solutions, today announced they have integrated their respective products to create a generalized and comprehensive solution for patients and their physicians to improve chronic disease management.
For the first time, patients will be able to take advantage of an integrated electronic solution to automatically track and record medical information, including their most current symptoms, medication side effects and whether they are having issues with compliance. In addition, patients will be able to share this information on a real-time basis with their physicians and caregivers.
“Because medications and compliance play such a pivotal role in the management of chronic conditions, knowing the pattern of how patients are taking their medication is important for maximizing the benefits and reducing the risks of the therapy,” said Eran Shalvesky, CEO of MedMinder.
“Patients’ behavior can be directly linked to therapy outcomes in many cases,” said Eyal Bartfeld, D.M.D, Ph.D., CEO of Irody. “Currently, physicians need to ask patients for this information and rely on good memory. Having the capability for patients to log relevant information right when and where it happened makes the record more detailed and accurate. With this new solution, we automatically collect the data about medication taking, and further enrich and enhance the accuracy of the data made available to both patients and clinicians.”
Through epilepsy.com, the first application of this automated and patient-friendly solution will be launched for patients with epilepsy. This application will make it possible to take information generated by MedMinder’s Maya™ pill dispenser and store it directly in Irody’s ActivPrescription™ software platform. Thousands of patients with epilepsy who have already adopted My Epilepsy Diary on epilepsy.com, the world’s largest website for epilepsy resources, information and community, will be able to access the Maya electronic pillbox through their diaries. The information from the Maya electronic pillbox will be added to patient reported symptoms and outcomes already available in the diary. Patients and physicians can get the information securely using the web, as well as on smart phones, when granted permission by the patient
Robert S. Fisher, M.D., Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief of epilepsy.com and Director of the Stanford Epilepsy Center and consultant to Irody commented, “This linking of an automated electronic pillbox with an on-line diary of seizures and side effects will provide real-world accurate information on seizures and missing medications. Adherence (compliance) is a major reason for treatment failure in epilepsy, and this solution is a new approach to the problem. It also could find use in clinical trials of new medications.”
“The combination of these two technologies advances how we can manage epilepsy to the best of our ability today and potentially to gain important patient information for improving the treatment of epilepsy in the future. Further, this new automated solution makes it possible and practical to track the patient’s experience, which is especially critical for people with epilepsy,” said Warren Lammert, Chairman of the Epilepsy Therapy Project. “We are delighted to take epilepsy.com’s “My Seizure Diary” to the next level and provide the epilepsy patient community with a state-of-the-art way to help manage their treatment.”
